A Great Case of the Mondays

View from the White House

This Monday my day started out rough, just like a Monday is supposed to start out I guess.  First I had gotten my car detailed on Saturday afternoon and was looking so forward to driving the pristine like-new car to work.  Well it was raining and to top it off my wife needed to use the car.  So not only did I not get to enjoy the benefits of the detail on the first drive but when I did get back into it, the new car feel would have simply turned into the dirty new car feel.  Believe it or not I was able to move past that and get on with my work day.

Once I got to work there had been an unfortunate chain of events that occurred from the traditional leaving ice cream to melt or being short staffed.  So with all this going on all I want to do is dig in and help my Chef De Cuisine get the restaurant going.

Finally get my cup of coffee Jason gets everyone moving in the right direction and our guests start to arrive.  it all sinks in- the whole reason I was in early this was to host  out of town chefs as well as food writers for breakfast and brunch this morning.  Most importantly- there was also a tour of the white house between breakfast and brunch.

At this point everything that has happened melts away as I meet Charles Phan of the Slanted Door in San Francisco and Alice Waters of Chez Panisse. We  welcomed former Food & Wine Best New Chef who I haven’t seen in four years, Gabriel Kreuther of The Modern.   These was a great group of out of town and many local chefs that were able to join us.  Once everyone arrived we were on our way to tour the White House.

I hadn’t been on a tour of the white house since I was in grade school, which unfortunately was a long time ago.   The tour started out in the main level and was very thorough about detailed accounts of the roles of each room.  We then headed downstairs to the main kitchen then out to the vegetable garden and the honey bees.  After that we headed back to the house, checked out the wine cellar, the flower room and the room which housed the original kitchen.  A bit different from my first tour.  So I guess my day didn’t turn out too bad.

Hopefully tomorrow holds something as interesting as this day did.
